Kyokushin karate
History and Heritage
The roots of Kyokushin Karate
The history of Kyokushin karate does not begin in the 1960s, but much earlier, in the life of its founder, Masutatsu Oyama.
Masutatsu Oyama's youth
Born in Korea in 1923 as Choi Young-Eui, Oyama moved to Japan at the age of 15. Fascinated by martial arts, he was quickly drawn into their world, training in judo and boxing. But it was an encounter with Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan karate, that changed his life forever.
Training alone in the mountains
At the age of 23, Oyama decided to devote himself to spiritual and physical improvement. He retreated to the mountains, where he trained alone for more than a year, practicing karate techniques, meditating and contemplating life. Upon his return, his legend as an invincible fighter grew, and he became known for his exceptional strength and skill.
The rise of Kyokushin
After many years of training, traveling and experiencing different styles of karate, in 1964 Oyama founded his own school, which he called Kyokushin. His style, characterized by full-contact sparring, became revolutionary in the karate world.
Kyokushin Philosophy
Kyokushin, which means "Ultimate Truth" in Japanese, is not just about fighting techniques. It is first and foremost a philosophy of life, based on seven principles: courtesy, courage, honesty, honor, modesty, effort and self-discipline.
Kyokushin in the World
Founded by Oyama, the school quickly grew in popularity, attracting students from around the world. Intense training, full-contact fighting and a philosophy of life attracted those who sought real challenges and spiritual growth.
Legacy and influence
Oyama died in 1994, but his legacy lives on today. Kyokushin karate has become one of the most influential and recognizable styles in the world, with branches in almost every country and a continuing mission to teach the "Ultimate Truth" through karate.
Summary
From solitary training in the mountains, to founding one of the most important karate schools in the world, to a global community, Karate Kyokushin is more than just a martial art. It is a way of life whose principles and philosophy are aimed not only at the physical, but above all at the spiritual improvement of a person.
